The Columbus County Detention Officer who died two hours after being sworn-in to office Monday has been identified by family and friends as AJ Shipman. The officer  apparently suffered a medical emergency. He collapsed and died at the sheriff’s office during orientation. Services have not been announced.

Dangerous triple digit heat moving back into the area today through next week. Shower and thunderstorm chances will be on the increase, but air temperatures could top 108 Saturday, Sunday and Monday.  The City of Whiteville issued a heat advisory in effect from 11:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. today.

Jury selection is underway for the first degree murder trial of James Robert Goins in Bladen County Superior Court. Goins allegedly stabbed, slashed and partially dismembered Kenneth Ross Covell before dumping him off the N.C. 11 bridge into the Cape Fear River in August 2020. A volunteer searcher found Covell’s body near the Riegelwood golf course. Goins and Covell had fought at a home in East Arcadia just before the killing.
