The general assembly adjourned Wednesday with no vote on the override of Gov. Josh Stein’s veto of SB 50. The bill would allow anyone 18 or older with no criminal record to purchase and carry a handgun without a concealed carry permit. Tuesday a record 12 vetoes were overridden, with eight passing both houses to become law. Those bills included banning taxpayer funded sex changes for inmates, requiring sheriffs and assistance officials to cooperate with immigrations, and expanding the role of the state auditor, among others.
A child rapist will be in prison until his 90s after taking a plea in Columbus County Superior Court. James Patrick McCormick, 34, was sentenced to a minimum of 60 years in prison for the rape of a girl in 2019 and 2020. The 11 year old revealed the ongoing sexual abuse after she was taken to Columbus Regional in 2020.
