
More than 100 rounds were fired into four vehicles and a four apartments during a gun fight early Saturday in Whiteville.
Police Chief Paul Rockenbach said an infant was almost hit by the gunfire when a bullet struck less than a foot above the child’s head.
Police were called to Brookberry Apartments at 105 MLK Avenue at 3:22 a.m. Saturday, according to the report. Damages to the automobiles was estimated at a total of $64,000, with $8,000 damage to the apartments.
Rockenbach said one of two suspects has been arrested in the case. Both are males, ages 18 and 19.
“The violence we witnessed this past weekend is absolutely unacceptable and will not be tolerated in the City of Whiteville,” he said in a press release. “The reckless disregard for human life demonstrated by individuals who choose to engage in gun violence will be met with swift and firm enforcement of the law.”
The chief said patrols will be increased in the area of Brookberry Apartments.
“We will strictly enforce violations related to loitering, drug activity, abandoned vehicles, parking infractions, and open container laws, with absolutely zero tolerance,” he said. “We are committed to removing those who threaten the safety and peace of our city”.
