Deputy, Driver Hurt in Thursday Wreck

A deputy and a Chadbourn area resident were hurt Thursday when the deputy’s patrol car struck a truck near Whiteville.

Deputy Timothy Stewart was cited for failure to reduce speed, according to Sgt. J. Weissinger of the Highway Patrol. Stewart was reportedly responding to a call when the crash occurred.

Stewart was heading west on Chadbourn Highway near the Whiteville Auto Auction when he failed to reduce speed and rear ended a 2005 Dodge truck driven by Harold Simmons of Chadbourn. The impact forced Simmons off the right shoulder, where he struck a road sign and came to rest against a tree.

Both Stewart and Simmons were transported to Columbus Regional with non-life threatening injuries, Weissinger said.

Simmons’ truck and the 2015 Dodge patrol car Stewart was operating were both totaled.
