Two Riegelwood Teams Head for Series in Dunn

Trouble often comes in pairs and that will be the case starting this Thursday as Riegelwood’s 6-U and 8-U DYB teams invade Dunn.

The tournament will take place at Tyler Park and Clarence Tart Memorial Park. The town and community of Riegelwood is expecting to have a large crowd going to Harnett County. The community has been busy with fundraisers and public engagements promoting the teams. They will be honored Monday night at the Columbus County Commissioners meeting on Monday at 6:30 p.m.

Riegelwood’s 6-U team is the first ever 6-U N.C. State Champions. With 11 teams in the state tournament, Riegelwood won eight out of nine games to secure the title. They pounded out 152 runs during the tournament and only allowed 76 runs. Riegelwood played three straight games on championship day in sweltering heat to win it all. They will represent North Carolina in the D-1 Bracket.

The Riegelwood 8-U coach-pitch went undefeated in the state tournament. They gave up a measly 43 runs to opponents while grounding out 113 runs. Their only loss during the year was to South Columbus.

Interesting facts: There are two sets siblings among both teams. Each set has a brother on the 6-U team and the 8-U squad. This is the also first time Riegelwood has had two teams go to the DYB World Series in a single year. The last time Riegelwood won the state tournament and went on to represent North Carolina for 8-U coach-pitch was 2017.

Riegelwood’s Coach-Pitch team includes (front row, left to right) Trenton Ward, Ander Grantham, Lincoln Garrell, Corbett Garrell, Parker Ward, Lawson Leath, Jonah Coleman, King Robinson, TJ Wright Jr., Bryson Reaves, Connor Stanley and Vance Fowler.  Coaches (back row, left to right) Paul Fowler, Paul Garrell, Christian Garrell, and Jonathon Stanley.
