Darlington Deputy Devin Mason will be eulogized today at 2 p.m. at West Columbus High School. The Darlington County officer died in the line of duty July 1. Visitation will be at WCHS until just before the service today. Mason’s body was escorted from South Carolina to Meares Funeral home last night.
Several roads in and around in Cerro Gordo will be closed during the procession from WCHS to Williamson Baptist Church Cemetery on Princess Ann Road. N.C. 242, Princess Ann Road, and Griffin Road at Princess will be closed. Sheriff Bill Roagers said the community is invited to line the route and show their support for the fallen officer.
Another deputy who was shot in the ambush is recovering. The suspect’s mother and girlfriend now face charges in the case.
Been in Whiteville, Mason was a native of Evergreen and attended red West Columbus High School, where he is remembered as a model student and a standout football player. He previously worked for Black’s Tire, but his lifelong dream was to be a law enforcement officer. He had been a deputy with the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office for less than three months when he was slain.
Mason leaves behind his fiancé, an infant son, his mother and an extended family.
