Here’s today’s Bottom Line
A very slow-moving trough of low(ish) pressure will interact with the Piedmont trough and the sea-breeze boundaries to trigger scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms this afternoon, Thursday, and Friday.
We’ll see a decent amount of sunshine today… with building cumulus towers this afternoon and the likelihood of thunderstorms. The best chances for storms may be just to our west, along the I-95 corridor, but there’s still a good chance for storms to impact ColCo.
Storms will be very slow-moving or even stationary (not moving at all). This would lead to an isolated flash-flooding threat as several inches of rainfall could occur in these storms.
Severe threat is low, but not zero, as wet downbursts are possible in the strongest cells. I think this will be the exception and not the rule.
Wash, rinse, and repeat for Thursday and Friday. I think the Bermuda high pressure ridge shifts a bit to the east (offshore), and this will result in a greater coverage of showers and storms. Storms will, again, be slow-moving and could trigger areas of flash flooding.
Our atmosphere today through Friday will be highly to critically unstable. Any storms that fire will be prolific lightning producers. Keep an eye and ear to the sky.
The extended period (Saturday into next week) looks a little bit drier according to the guidance as middle-atmosphere ridging from the Bermuda high appears to build back into the area. This results in less storm coverage and more sunshine. BUT… the presence of high instability, the Piedmont trough, and the sea-breeze will likely trigger at least isolated to widely scattered storms for the weekend into next week. Highs will be in the lower 90s through the period.
TROPICAL UPDATE: I see no areas of concern for tropical weather in the near future.
