The woman who claimed an infant had been raped is facing felony charges after the accusation was disproven.
Tonia Nicole Godwin, 40, of 167 Page’s Mill Rd., Cerro Gordo, was held under $5,000 secured bond under a single charge of filing a felony false report involving a child victim, according to detention center reports.
Godwin allegedly contacted the sheriff’s office June 28 and said that her five month old godchild had been sexually penetrated. Godwin told deputies that the child’s mother told Godwin about the alleged sex assault.
Deputies had the child undergo a professional medical examination, during which no evidence of sexual assault was found, the report said. Godwin was then charged with filing the false report.
“The sheriff’s office takes all reports of crimes against children extremely seriously,” Sheriff Bill Rogers said in a press release. The CCSO “thoroughly investigates each case to protect the welfare of minors in the community.”
