Layken Lancaster of Central Columbus hit a grand slam to propel the Angels to a 5-3 victory over South Carolina in the series final of the DYB World Series Softball Tournament, held in Ruston, La.
Down 3-1 in the bottom of the third inning, Chloe Hobgood got a single. Aubrey Floyd singled along with Paiseley Floyd to load the bases. Then Layken Lancaster cleared the bases with a home run heard all the way back in Peacock and Vinegar Hill, giving the Angels the lead for good.
Central Columbus had a chance to finish off South Carolina earlier in the day, but lost 4-3 to force a second game for a winner-take-all.
The Central Columbus Angels were dominant during the season, especially the pitching and defense. Going 14-1 on the season, they had four shutouts and four one-run games. The Angels had an impressive 2.0 ERA during the season. They crushed opponents. Their only loss was to South Carolina and they mounted a rally in the fifth to almost win that game.
When time thinks of the Central Columbus Angels, they will remember heart, determination, and domination. But, most of all, they will be remembered as World Champions.
