The sheriffβs office reported that a clerk called 911 after the unidentified male came into the store around 6:30 p.m. and βimplied possession of a weapon.β The suspect then attempted to rob the store, the report said. When he was unsuccessful, he grabbed $10 worth of merchandise and fled the scene.
Columbus County Animal Protective Services is closed to all but emergency intakes due to overcrowding. Adoptable pets can be found on their Facebook page. Donations of food are being accepted at Gurganous Farm Store in Whiteville.
Residents of Lake Waccamaw, Buckhead and St. James spoke out against the proposed 4,500 home development along Old Lake Road. Commissioners have expressed no support for the plan, which was forward with a positive endorsement by the planning board. The project could bring more than 10,000 new residents to the area. Concerns over the project include congestion, environmental impact, and pollution, as well as stormwater and flooding.
