The Tabor City area man found dead in a pond near his home in February was shot once in the back of the head, according to the autopsy report. Ervin Johnson was reported missing February 15.  A relative found his body a short distance from the family home several days later. The death has been ruled a homicide. The State Bureau of Investigation is handling the case.

The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office is seeking a white male suspected of several break-ins and larcenies in the Riegelwood area. The man has been caught on surveillance footage knocking on doors and scouting properties.  Call 910.642.6551 if you have information about the suspect.

Whiteville is losing $5.1 million in FEMA flood prevention funding, money that would have helped improve Mollies Branch. The City of Whiteville had planned to use the $5.1 million from FEMA’s Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) program with a $1.3 million grant from the N.C. Emergency Management to radically improve drainage in the western half of the city.
