No adults were in the home when the fire was reported around 2:59 a.m.

Four sisters, ages 2 to 7 years, died in a structure fire near Chadbourn early Saturday morning. The home is located at 259 N. Colony Road.

Columbus County Fire Marshal Shannon Blackman said two 11 year olds managed to escape and call 911, but were unable to get to the victims.

A sheriff’s deputy on patrol and a Chadbourn Rescue team en route back from Columbus Regional were on the scene within seven minutes, and confirmed that the home was fully engulfed.

“There was no way they could enter the structure at that point,” Blackman said.

No adults were home with the children at the time of the fire, Blackman said.

Multiple fire departments responded with apparatus and manpower. Sheriff Bill Rogers said investigators were only able to enter the remains around noon.

Blackman said the cause of the fire is undetermined. It is under investigation by the Columbus County Fire Marshal, Sheriff’s Office, State Bureau of Investigation and State Fire Marshal.
