A fourth suspect is now in custody from the July 5 gunfight that damaged several homes and vehicles, with gunfire barely missing a sleeping infant.
Jalon McMillian, 19, of 203 Stanley St., Whiteville, is being held under no bond, charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, and discharging a firearm into occupied property, detention records show. He was arrested Wednesday afternoon by Whiteville Police.
Less than 12 hours before McMillian’s arrest, Quandarion Rakeivayan Gaddy, 22, of 1571 Red Store Road, was charged with discharging a firearm in the city, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, discharging a firearm into occupied property, and failure to appear.
Shamar Deontra Johnson, 24, of 71 Pine Circle Dr., Tabor City, was arrested shortly after the incident. He was charged with multiple counts of discharging a firearm into occupied property, and held under $20,000 secured bond.
Rahmel Chavis, 40, of 2519 Chadbourn Hwy., Whiteville, was arrested in July on charges relating to the incident. He was arrested Aug 4 with the assistance of Robeson County authorities, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.
Chavis was charged with multiple counts of assault with three counts of deadly weapon with intent to kill, carrying a concealed weapon, discharging a firearm in the city, and possession of a firearm by a felon. He was also charged with an unrelated count of possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver marijuana. His bond was set at $28,000. McMillian, Johnson and another man were listed as the victims on Chavis’ warrants.
Whiteville Police said multiple men were involved in the 3 a.m. shootout. More than 100 rounds were fired, and a sleeping infant narrowly escaped injury as bullets tore through the home in the Brookberry Apartments on MLK Drive. Warrants show that Rahmel Chavis was an apparent target in the attack. Damages were estimated in excess of $65,000.
WPD Chief Paul Rockenbach said additional arrests are possible. Anyone with information about the gunfight is asked to call 910.642.5111.
