
In Dublin, West Bladen saw an early lead fade away as the Knights fell to the Pender Patriots 34-12 on Friday night.
It was the season opener for both teams, and the Knights felt the effects of it with 10 penalties for 80 yards during the game. Pender struck first in the first quarter as QB Austin Peal ran it in from four yards out to give the Patriots a 6-0 lead. The PAT attempt failed after the TD.
The Knights got on the board early in the second with a fouryard touchdown run from Ahmarie White to tie the game 6-6. White would later score a one yard TD to give the Knights a 12-6 lead. White would end up with 77 yards on 21 carries to go with his two touchdowns on the night. Pender’s ground game woke up and scored a pair of TD’s, one an eight-yard touchdown by Jaheim Lambe and another eight-yarder from Zeke Williams to make it 20-12. the Patriots converted the PAT on the second TD to make it 22-12. The score stayed that way until halftime.
With 5:15 left in the third quarter, Pender pushed the lead to 28-12 another three yard touchdown from Jaheim Lambe. In the fourth, the Patriots put the game out of reach with a 15- yard run to the endzone by ZyQuan Murphy to make it 34-12 with 3:13 left.
White led the Knights with 77 of the 163 yards West Bladen rushed. Sincere McKinley added 53 yards on 11 carries. Devin Haire went 2-4 for 10 yards passing. Pender ran for 268 yards on the night. Jaheim Lambe toted the rock six times for 95 yards and two TD’s. ZyQuan Murphy added 73 yards on eight carries with a touchdown.
West Bladen (0-1) will go to county rival East Bladen for the Annual Battle for the Bell. West Bladen last won the Bell in 2001, the first year they played each other.
Pender (1-0) will host Red Springs in Burgaw next Friday.
