Southeastern Community College’s Cosmetology Salon and Spa will give free haircuts to students heading back to school this fall. Head Cosmetology Instructor Eli Murillo is looking forward to helping children “feel special and great” when they go back to school. Haircuts will be done between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 21 in B-building, Room 128 on campus.

“A fresh haircut can make a huge difference,” Murillo said. “And not only that, it lets them know what it feels like to be in a salon. At the end of the day, we just want to give back to the kids to start their year off on a good note.”

Murillo explained that walk-ins are available but booking an appointment is preferred. With 17 students working on the salon floor, Murillo is confident that every child will walk away with a smile on their face. She said that there will be no skin fades.

“North Carolina State Board’s number one priority besides sanitation is that the students get hands-on experience,” Murillo said. “With this hands-on experience, our team members will be more confident and build out their timing as well. When they graduate and walk into a salon, they will be ready to go.”

SCC’s Natural Hair Care class will provide free two to six braid feed-ins on Aug. 20 and 21 from 6-8:30 p.m. Murillo said to come with your hair already washed.
