Shelter Hits Maximum Capacity Again

It’s been a big year for puppies and kittens – and that is bad news for Columbus Animal Protective Services.

The shelter is once again at maximum capacity, according to a social media post. APS staff has temporarily ceased all intake of strays and owner surrenders, as well as trapping strays. Only true emergency cases will be admitted to the shelter.

There is an urgent need for adoptive families, APS said. Adoptable pets can be found on their Facebook page, or prospective new petowners are welcome to come by the shelter to give a pet a new home. You can also find adoptable pets at the shelter in the CCN Pet of the Week feature.

Adoption fees include a spay/neuter voucher as well as some vaccinations. The fee for dogs is $135, $55 for intact male cats and $75 for intact female cats. Rescues with a 501c3 status receive a significant discount.

Staff have sent out requests for help to legitimate rescue groups, but the situation is similar across the area. Brunswick, Bladen, New Hanover, Pender and Horry counties have all been closed at least once lately due to the overwhelming number of animals being abandoned or surrendered.

The shelter is asking for donations of towels, blankets, flat sheets, cleaning products, dog and cat food (wet or dry), toys, and dog/cat treats.

The shelter is located at 288 Legion Drive in Whiteville. To find out how you can help or for animal adoption information, call 910.641.3945.
