
South Columbus 27 Swansboro 21
Swansboro-South Columbus squeezed by Swansboro 27-21 Friday in the non-conference season opener for both squads. The Pirates struck early with a 72 yard TD bomb from QB Kevin Till to Nolan Armstong. The PAT gave Swansboro a 7-0 lead with 11:01 left in the first quarter.
The Pirates intercepted the Stallions on the next drive and had great field position at the 20 yard line, but the drive stalled out and the Pirates missed a 28 yard field goal to come away with nothing. South Columbus struck back with a 65 yard pass from Jaimon Flipps to Easton McPherson to cut the lead to 7-6. The point after try failed. The Stallions added a touchdown with 9:09 left in the second quarter and carried a 14-7 lead into half with the two-point conversion.
In the third quarter, Till hit Carmello Beasley in the endzone to tie the game 14-14. Briar Johnson then tossed a 55 yard TD to put South Columbus up 21-14. The Stallions added a rushing touchdown early in the fourth to give them a 27-14 lead. The Pirates scored a TD with 2:00 minutes left to cut the lead to 27-21 and got the ball back with 31 seconds left at their own 30 yard line, but time ran out on Swansboro.
Swansboro falls to 0-1 on the year. They will host Pamlico Friday night. The Stallions (1-0) will host cross county rival West Columbus Friday at Vinegar Hill.
Latta, SC 42 East Columbus 8
Latta SC-Latta defeated East Columbus 42-8 in football Friday night. The Gators (0-1) will host Heide Trask on Friday. Latta will host Marion (SC) Friday.
