
SHALLOTTE – Whiteville took on the Trojans of West Brunswick Friday, but let the Trojans get the best of them 38-21 on Friday night. After a scoreless first quarter, the Wolfpack put points on the scoreboard first with a nine-yard TD run, Price Wheatley added the PAT to give Whiteville a 7-0 lead.
West Brunswick tied the score with a rushing touchdown and got the ball back with 1:59 left in the half after a Wolfpack fumble on their own 49-yard line. The Trojans failed to capitalize and the score ended 7-7 at the half.
The Trojans took the lead in the third quarter when Josiah Borton connected with a touchdown pass to Jude Surigao. West Brunswick failed to convert the extra point and the score was 13-7, Trojans. After returning the kickoff back to their own 37-yard line, the Wolfpack took their next possession down the field and scored on a three-yard run by Cody Rice. Wheatley added the PAT and the Wolfpack led 14-13.
With the Trojans leading 19-14, their special teams got involved by returning a punt to the house to give West Brunswick a 26-14 lead to end the third quarter.
Whiteville started the fourth quarter with a two-yard run from Sabeyhon Shipman for a touchdown to make it 26-21 after the Wheatley PAT. Whiteville got the ball back and had it deep in Trojan territory only to be intercepted at the seven-yard line. West Brunswick scored a few plays later to put it 32-21 Trojans. The Trojans sealed the game with a pick six to make the final score 38-21.
The Trojans (2-0) go to Little River, S.C. next Friday to play North Myrtle Beach (1-1). Whiteville, now 1-1 on the season, will host East Bladen (2-0) Friday.
Also on Friday night, Heide Trask (1-1) beat East Columbus 37-0 in football. The Titans will play at Boiling Springs Friday against South Brunswick (0-2). The Gators fall to 0-2 on the season. They will try to regroup next week in Bear Creek against Chatham Central (1-1).
The Bears are pass-happy and feature dual threat sophomore QB Brooks Albright. Albright after two games has 321 yards passing, 103 rushing, a 100.3 QB rating, and completed 67 percent of his passes.
