
Penalty-ridden game in Viking Country
In Cerro Gordo Friday night, the Whiteville Wolfpack demolished West Columbus 48-8 in the season opener for both squads.
Whiteville came into hoping to build on last season’s Eastern Finals appearance while the Vikings were looking to build on last season. The rivalry playing in a season opener helped motivate both teams in the contest. The game was full of mistakes from being the first game but also from the players’ chatter, resulting in continuous flag throwing throughout the night.
The Wolfpack took the opening drive down to the 15-yard line before fumbling the ball to the Vikings. The Vikings proceeded to go backwards. A sack, a penalty, and two incomplete passes forced West Columbus to punt out their own endzone. A bad snap resulted in a safety and a 2-0 lead for the Wolfpack.
Whiteville took the free kickoff from the safety down to the Viking 40 yard line. Four plays later, Sebeyhon Shipman took it in from seven yards out to make the score 8-0. Price Wheatley kicked the extra for a 9-0 score. After a Viking punt and a Whiteville interception deep in Viking territory, the Wolfpack got another safety on a sack to make the score 11-0.
Whiteville took the free kick back to midfield and drove down the field scoring a touchdown on a four-yard run by Emanual Kemp. Sebeyhon Shipman ran in the two point conversion to up the Wolfpack lead to 19-0 with 11:22 left in the second quarter. The Vikings took the kickoff back to the Whiteville 40-yard line. DJ Graham completed a 15-yarder to get the Vikings down to the 25-yard line. Four plays later DJ Graham threw a five yard touchdown pass to make it 19-6.
The two-point conversion cut the Wolfpack lead 19-8. The Wolfpack responded the next drive with a five play score, culminating with Tylae Rose running it in from 11 yards out. The extra point by Wheatley pushed the score to 26-8 with 3:56 left in the second quarter. The Wolfpack later scored again before the half with an 11-yard touchdown from Josh Lacewell with Shipman converting the two-point conversion to make it 34-8 at half. The second half started with and went through the third quarter with no scoring but plenty of players mouths and referee flags for both teams. The fourth quarter saw the final scoring for game. Josh Lacewell took it to the house with a 65-yard touchdown run with 11:00 minutes in the forth. Price Wheatley’s kick made the score 41-8, Whiteville. Trayvionne Williams scored later on a seven- yard run later with Wheatley adding the extra point for the final score of 48-8.
Whiteville (1-0) goes to West Brunswick for the 130 Battle next Friday. West Columbus, 0-1 on the year, goes to Vinegar Hill to do spar with South Columbus next week.
