An 11-month-old child is in serious condition and a woman has been charged with abusing the girl. A male suspect s still being sought in the case.
Hali Canter, 31, of 973 Lake Park Dr., Chadbourn, was arrested Monday on a single charge of felony negligent child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury. Her bond was set at $1,500.
Wayne Kienzie is still sought in the case.
The sheriff’s office reported that Scotland Memorial Hospital contacted Columbus County authorities after the child was brought in with “visible injuries” to her mouth, face and body.
“Through investigation, deputies and detectives determined the injuries were consistent with ongoing physical abuse,” the report said. The infant was transferred to UNC Children’s Hospital for advanced care, where further evaluation revealed signs of potential chronic trauma and seizure activity. The Department of Social Services was notified and involved in the case.
Warrants show the alleged abuse occurred in the early morning hours of July 31, and neither Canter nor Kienzle sought treatment for the baby.
Canter was taken into custody Aug. 4, the report said, and Kienzle is being sought by multiple agencies. He is wanted for felony child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury.
