Regan Nicole Powers was charged with four counts each of involuntary manslaughter and felony negligent child abuse on Wednesday. The mother of Kalani, Kendall, Josephina and Sophia Melvin was not present when their home burned Aug. 30. The girls died in the fire. The girls’ 11 year old sister Winter and a 12 year old escaped.
Basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal announced Thursday that he has partnered with sheriffs from Georgia, Florida, and North Carolina to cover all the expenses for the family. The girls will be eulogized this Saturday in Fairmont at 2:00 p.m. A memorial was held Tuesday in Chadbourn.
The murder of a Ukrainian woman on a commuter train in Charlotte is sparking calls for stricter sentencing guidelines for repeat criminals as well as oversight of local judges. Rep. Brenden Jones was interviewed on Newsmax Tuesday discussing the General Assembly’s plans to handle rising crime rates and mental health care. Iryna Zariutska was stabbed to death by a 14 time convicted felon who had been released without bond. The Justice Department has filed charges against him along with the state.
