Whiteville City Council on Tuesday will honor retiring Deputy Police Chief Billy Hinz, and Andre Jackson will take the oath for that position. The board will also hear an update on the airport water and sewer improvements, and the Provalus project. The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall and can also be viewed online.

 

A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. for a local veteran. Corby Ward served in the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam. When Angela Norris discovered Ward’s only kin could not help with his final arrangements, Norris and volunteers with the Veterans Memorial Park of America stepped up to help honor Ward. All veterans and the public are invited to attend the service at Peacock Funeral at 1227 Madison Street, Whiteville.

 

Columbus County Commissioner Giles ‘Buddy’ Byrd is out on $500 bond on a charge of misdemeanor larceny in Bladen County. Byrd, age 76, allegedly took a five gallon bucket of hydraulic oil from a location in Tar Heel.  The alleged incident occurred Aug. 31, and Byrd was taken into custody Tuesday.
