Columbus County Commissioner Giles ‘Buddy’ Byrd is out on $500 bond on a charge of misdemeanor larceny in Bladen County. Byrd, age 76, allegedly took a five gallon bucket of hydraulic oil from a location in Tar Heel.  The alleged incident occurred Aug. 31.

Local businessman and philanthropist Ricky Benton was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine Thursday in a surprise ceremony at Vineland Station. The honor is granted to North Carolinians who have gone above and beyond for their communities.

Bladen County authorities have arrested a Harrells man after he allegedly sexually abused a family member for years. Joshua Poe Hatfield, age 41, was arrested after an extensive investigation. He has been charged with statutory rape and sex offense and sexual battery. He is being held under no bond.
