Man Charged After Waving Gun in Insurance Office

Raymond Whitmarsh (Detention Center)

An insurance customer ended up in jail after he allegedly waved a handgun around in a Whiteville office Friday.

Raymond Lloyd Whitmarsh, 54, was held under $12,500 secured bond on charges of going armed to the terror of the public and sale and deliver of opiates, according to detention center records. His address was listed as 3069 Princess Ann Rd., Chadbourn.

Lt. Scott Moody of the Whiteville Police said Whitmarsh entered the State Farm office on J.K. Powell Boulevard around 9 a.m. to enquire about theft insurance on a building. He was discussing the building when he allegedly told the staff that a potential thief would have to get past his “dogs,” then drew the pistol and said he “wished someone would try.”

Whitmarsh then left the business, the report said. He did not point the weapon at anyone.

Police located him a short time later, and discovered he had an outstanding warrant for drug charges.
