Saturday Shooting Leaves One Hurt

Frederick Lavone Canady (CCSO)

A North Whiteville shooting sent one man to the hospital and a convicted felon to jail Saturday.

Frederick Lavone Canady, 49, of 91 Pridgen Acres, Clarkton, is being held under no bond. The sheriff’s office said in a oppress release that Canady is charged with attempted murder and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Canady is alleged to have shot Montorius Sinatra Vereen, 35, with a handgun at a home on Luben Lane, Whiteville. Luben Lane is located off of Campground Road.

Deputies were called to the hospital after Vereen was taken there by private vehicle. Detectives and deputies then went to the scene, where they were able to identify a suspect with the assistance of witnesses.

Canady previously served time for robbery with a dangerous weapon in a Robeson County case, and was legally prohibited from owning a firearm. He pleaded guilty on April 25, 2008, according to court records, and was sentenced to 146-185 months in prison.
