Area Soccer Roundup: Championship Hunts

Entering the last week of the regular season, local soccer teams are making a final push toward their regular season titles.

In Red Springs, Whiteville saw its regular season title hopes dashed as Red Springs defeated the Wolfpack 2-1. The loss puts the Pack at 3-3 in the Southeastern Conference and 6-11-2 overall. Westyn Hill scored the lone goal for Whiteville. Red Springs (10-7) is tied for the conference lead with South Brunswick. Both teams have a conference record of 5-2. The Wolfpack will host South Columbus (0-7, 1-15) on Wednesday.

At Vinegar Hill, West Bladen kept their conference title hopes alive with a 2-1 win over South Columbus (0-7, 1-15). It was the third straight win for the Knights, who are now 4-3 in the Southeastern Conference and 6-9-1 overall. Alejandro Lopez and Diego Santos-Hernendez put in goals for the Knights, who trail South Brunswick and Red Springs by one game. West Bladen host South Brunswick (5-2, 9-7-3) on Tuesday. If they can defeat South Brunswick and Whiteville defeats Red Springs in a make-up match, the Knights will share the title with the Cougars and Red Devils.

In Elizabethtown, East Bladen shut out Lakewood 7-0. Ishaq Algozy scored six goals to lead the Eagles, who are now 6-2-2 in the Carolina Conference and 9-5-4 overall. The Carolina Conference is in a four-team knot at the top, with just a game separating the top four teams. East Bladen could win the conference or finish fourth with one game left in the regular season. Lakewood concluded its regular season with a 7-4-1 conference record and are 7-11-1 overall.

In Calypso, North Duplin crushed West Columbus 10-1. Douglas Torres, Jerrson Lopez, Allan Valencia, and Emanuel Mendez scored two goals each for the Rebels while Victor Mata and Sergio Garcia put in a goal each, North Duplin finishes its regular season with the win. The Rebels are now 3-7-2 in the Carolina Conference and 3-8-2 overall. The Vikings (0-11, 0-12) will conclude its regular season hosting East Bladen on Oct. 23.
