Columbus County officials warned Friday that some assistance recipients in the county may see delays in November. In a joint statement, the health department and social services warned that the federal government shutdown could slow benefits for the WIC and Food Nutrition Services programs. Section 8 landlords who depend on government funding have also been warned by officials in Washington that they could see shortages in the coming months due to the shutdown.

Marty Strickland of Cerro Gordo is in jail under a secured bond after he allegedly pointed a fully automatic handgun at deputies Saturday. Strickland, age 66, was charged with assault on a female, assault on a law officer by pointing a gun, and other felonies. He allegedly pointed the weapon at deputies responding to a call about a domestic dispute on Pine Circle Drive.

Cheyanne Spurling was charged with misdemeanor child abuse after her naked son was found playing in a roadway. Spurling, age 23, is alleged to have allowed the toddler to sleep in a room with a hole in the floor. The child climbed out and was missing for more than an hour before he was found, according to warrants.
