Cerro Gordo Man Charged with Assaulting Deputy, Woman

Deputies have charged a Cerro Gordo man after he allegedly threatened a deputy with a suppressed, fully automatic weapon and assaulted his wife Saturday.

Marty Levon Strickland, 64, of 3781 Cherry Grove Church Road, was charge with felony possession of a weapon of mass destruction; assault by pointing a gun; assault on a law enforcement officer by pointing a gun; resisting; and interfering with emergency communications. He was held under $100,000 with a domestic violence retainer, according to court records.

Warrants and  reports show deputies were called to a home on Pine Circle Drive near Tabor City to a report of domestic violence Saturday around 7 p.m. When Dep. S. Lee approached Strickland, warrants show he pointed a gun at the deputy. Strickland then fled back inside the residence, where he fired at least one shot. No one was injured by the bullet. That gun was later determined to be a suppressed, fully automatic TEC-9 handgun.

Strickland also allegedly struck his wife with a “revolver with an orange handle,” warrants show. He allegedly prevented her from calling 911 and struck her repeatedly with a pillow.

When Strickland was taken into custody, he reportedly fought with deputies who were trying to handcuff him. The report said there was evidence that multiple rounds had been fired inside the home.

Deputies seized multiple shell casings, modern and antique firearms plus ammunition from the home, including a sawed-off shotgun and the modified TEC-9.
