
DUBLIN—West Bladen celebrated homecoming Friday night but the rest of the celebrating was done by Fairmont as the Tornadoes upset the Knights 12-7.
With the win, Fairmont ended a 17-game losing streak dating back to Oct. 19, 2023 when they also defeated the Knights 26-14. The win gives the Tornadoes a 1-1 record in the Southeastern Conference and 1-6 overall.
The first half was bland and plain as no teams crossed the goal line. West Bladen then decided to add some salt and pepper. On the first drive of the third quarter, the Knights went six plays and 63 yards capped off by a 27-yard TD run by Ahmarie White to put the Knights ahead.
Jonah Bryan added the extra point to make the score 7-0 with 9:37 remaining in the third quarter. The Tornadoes returned the favor on the next drive. Fairmont took a 10-play drive ending with a 19-yard scamper from Jeremiah Morris to put the score 7-6 with 6:20 on the clock in the third.
Fairmont drove deep in West Bladen territory early in the fourth, only to have the Knights’ Keon Whittington intercept a Tornado pass at the two yard line. Fairmont held the Knights and with 2:54 left in the game Jamarion Brown ran 17 yards into the end zone to put Fairmont ahead 12-7. The Knights comeback drive failed and the game ended.
“I’m just thrilled for these guys. They kept fighting and I couldn’t be more proud of them,” Coach Scott Loosemore stated. The Tornadoes held the Knights to 137 yards of total offense. Jamarion Brown had 83 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries for Fairmont. Fairmont is scheduled to host Whiteville (2-0, 5-2) next Friday. West Bladen goes to 0-2 in the conference and 2-5 overall. they will go to Red Springs (0-2, 2-5) on Oct.17.
