The history and legend behind a Robeson County outlaw will be discussed at the Nov. 8 meeting of the Southeastern North Carolina Genealogical Society.
Dr. Lawrence Locklear of UNC-Pembroke will speak on Henry Berry Lowrie and the Lowrie War.
Locklear is the director of Southeast American Indian Studies and adjunct associate professor in the Department of American Indian Studies, both at the UNCP.
The Lowrie War (also spelled Lowry) was the name of the decade-long fight between the famous outlaw band and local, state, and federal authorities from 1864 through 1874.
The society will meet at 2 p.m. Nov. 8 at Whiteville Missionary Alliance Church Fellowship Hall, 623 Warrior Trail, Whiteville. Some members and visitors arrive early to share family histories. Everyone is welcome.
