Ladies Tennis Playoffs Begin Monday

Next Monday, the NCHSAA ladies tennis playoffs begins. Last Friday, the association released the brackets with three local teams qualifying. All three will compete in the 3A tournament bracket.

\Whiteville, fourth in the Southeastern Conference with a 5-9-1 overall record, will go to Martin County (3-7), the No. 14 seed in the playoff bracket. Whiteville goes into the tournament as a 19 seed.
The East Columbus Gators are led by number one seed Riley Cowan, a junior who posted a 16-4 singles record on the season.
The Wolpack were paced by their top seed senior Allison Arp, who showcased a 9-6 singles record on the season. Second seed Chloe Thompson boasted a 6-9 record as a freshman. West Bladen received the eight seed while South Columbus garnered the nine seed with both teams get first round byes.
The Knights and Stallions have some twists in their bracket pairings. First is that they play each other in the second round after getting the byes. Second is that West Bladen is a seeded higher when South Columbus finished higher than them in the conference regular season and defeated them both times in the regular season.
West Bladen (5-4, 7-4) is led by top seed senior Faith Wren, who posted a 12-7 singles record on the year. Senior Leleigh Anderson had a stout 13-6 record in singles also for the Knights. South Columbus, who finished 7-3 in the Southeastern Conference and 7-4 overall, are charged by junior Morgan Cartrette, who was 2-9 in singles this season. Carolina Greene, a junior, sported a 3-8 singles record for the Stallions.
It Is the first time the NCHSAA has released eight brackets for the playoffs. The playoffs will continue through Nov. 1. The state championships will be played on Friday Oct.31 and Nov. 1 in Burlington, NC at the Burlington Tennis Center. The 5A, 6A, 7A, and 8A will be held on Friday while the 1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A will go on Saturday.
