
West Bladen and South Columbus got off to great starts in the NCHSAA volleyball playoffs while East Bladen and West Columbus saw their season end Saturday.
East Columbus also made the playoffs but received a bye in the first round. The second round matches will continue Tuesday.
West Bladen advanced to the second round of the 3A playoffs Saturday with a 3-1 win over Pender. The Knights took the victory with set scores of 25-12, 25-20, 22-25, and 25-12. Kimberly Dowless had 13 kills to lead the Knights, while Natalee Sykes and Pope Greer shared the ball tremendously with 20 assists each. With the win, the nine seeded Knights will travel to eight seed Bartlett Yancey (16-5) on Tuesday.
South Columbus (12-11) got past Wilson Beddingfield on Saturday with a 3-1 win. The Stallions, the 16 seed in the 3A tournament, will face top seed Ayden-Grifton (22-7). Beddingfield ended its season 7-11.
East Bladen lost 3-1 to conference opponent Hobbton. The Eagles entered the 2A tournament as a 19 seed. East Bladen concluded its year with a 7-16 record. Hobbton will travel to three seed Camden County (20-5) on Tuesday.
West Columbus lost to Pamlico 3-0 in the first round of the 2A playoffs. West Columbus, the 24 seed, finishes its season 3-15. Pamlico (17-8) will take on Eno River Academy (15-6) Tuesday in the second round.
East Columbus (19-1) received a first round bye in the 1A volleyball tournament as the three seed. The Gators enter the playoffs as Carolina Conference Regular Season Champions and Carolina Conference Tournament Champions.
East Columbus is carrying a 19-game winning streak into the tournament. The Gators’ opponent in The Swamp Tuesday will be Neuse Charter (11-12), whose Cougars advanced by defeating Rocky Mount Prep 3-0 in the first round.
Neuse Charter is led by Layla Johnson, who has 206 kills on the season. East Columbus is paced by Malia Graham, who has a .702 hitting percentage, number one in the state. Graham also has 198 kills for the year.
The winners of the second round matches will continue play on Thursday.
