CALYPSO — North Duplin overcame a slow start to defeat East Columbus 53-12 in. Friday’;s football action.
Carnell Phillips led the Rebels with 251 yards rushing on 22 carries for four touchdowns in the rout. The win sets up a showdown next Friday for the Carolina Conference championship at Hobbton (5-0, 6-3). North Duplin is 5-0 in the conference and 8-1 overall.
Both teams are in excellent position for the upcoming 2A playoffs.
Carnell Phillips scored early for the Rebels and teammate Quan Stevens ran one in a few minutes later to put North Duplin ahead 14-0. East Columbus responded with Christian Norton returning the kickoff 75 yards to make it 14-7 with the extra point. Camdyn Summerlin crossed the goal line from 37 yards away on the next drive to expand the Rebels lead 20-6.
Gator Dawson Crosby scored from two yards out early in the second quarter to close the gap to 20-12. The Gators momentum continued as they recovered the following onside kick, but an interception on the first play of the drive killed all of it. That would be as close as the Gators would get as it was all North Duplin for the rest of the game. Phillips ran in another touchdown before the half to give North Duplin a 28-12 advantage.
Phillips scored again from 10 yards out and Messiah Cooper crossed the goal line to put North Duplin ahead 39-12 in the third quarter. Phillips added a two-yard run also in the fourth. While Carnell Phillips had his usual all-star night, teammate Camdyn Summerlin amassed 115 yards on just three carries.
Dawson Crosby led East Columbus with 82 total yards in the loss. The Gators fall to 0-5 in the conference and 2-7 on the season. East Columbus is in the 1A classification. The Gators are number 13 in the rankings and are sitting in great shape to make the playoffs.
