With the ongoing federal government shutdown and the reduction of SNAP benefits, many local families are experiencing increased financial strain, the Food Bank said in a news release. To help address this growing need, the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina will continue to operate its Pop-Up Market free food distributions throughout the winter months.
No identification, income information, or proof of residency is required. Each event is open to the public. Participants may pick up food for family, friends and neighbors.
Fresh fruits and vegetables are the main groceries available, with a limited supply of dry goods and beverages. Spanish speaking volunteers are available for assistance if needed. All food distributions are open on a first come, first served basis.
“The Food Bank and its partner agencies continue to play an essential role in supporting residents who are facing food insecurity,” said Dr. Howard Marshall Wallace II, County Extension Director for NC Cooperative Extension, Columbus County Center. “These markets provide accessible, dignified support for anyone who may need it during this difficult time.”
