
TABOR CITY — South Brunswick rode into Vineger Hill and came out with a close and crucial win Friday against South Columbus 28-27.
Jayden Daniels found Edward Young in the back of the end zone from six yards out with under two minutes to go and then jump passed the two-point conversion to Gregory Brock to claim the victory. The win puts the Cougars at 2-1 in the Southeastern Conference and 5-3 overall.
The Cougars got on the board first in the first quarter with a touchdown pass from Jayden Daniels to Chanler Rose from four yards out to give them the early lead. Collin Peattie kicked the extra point to make it South Brunswick 7-0.
The Stallions struck back with just under 10 minutes left in the second quarter with a 79-yard sprint to the end zone from Gentry Thompson for the touchdown. The Stallions tied the score 7-7 with the Oscar Valdez extra point. Daniels found Corben Farrow in the end zone on the next Cougar drive to put South Brunswick back on top 14-7 with the PAT. South Columbus tied the game up before halftime with a Briar Johnson halfback pass from six yards out to Nasir Hutchinson. Valdez hit the extra point to make it 14-14.
Jayden Daniels put the Cougars back on top as he found Grady Sotriffer in the back of the end zone from the 16 yard line. The failed PAT made it 20-14 in South Brunswick’s favor. South Columbus took the lead with 3:15 left in the third quarter with a nine-yard touchdown run from Easton McPherson.
Valdez added the extra point to give the Stallions a 21-20 advantage. South Columbus added to their lead as Jaxon Greene hit Preston Dager for a seven-yard touchdown strike. South Columbus missed the extra point to leave the score in favor of the Stallions 27-20.
South Brunswick was not to be denied as with 1:43 left in the game, Daniels again found the end zone. Daniels tossed it to Edward Young from 42 yards away to put the Cougars down by one. They went for two and it paid off. Daniels hit Gregory Brock for the pass from the two -yard line and put South Brunswick ahead for good 28-27.
South Brunswick will host Fairmont (1-2, 1-7) Friday. South Columbus goes to 2-1 in the conference and 4-4 overall. They will travel to Dublin and face West Bladen (0-3, 2-6) next Friday.
