Columbus County has so much fun, learning, and spooktacular events headed your way over the next couple of weeks. Hang out with the Waccamaw Siouan at their annual Pow Wow, visit some local haunts, sing at the Lake Waccamaw Depot Museum, or consider donating to a church or child in need. We’ve got all your weekend destinations lined up in this edition of The Good News.    

The CCN Trick or Treat Guide has been updated. If your church or organization is having a fall festival, safe night, or trunk or treat for Halloween, it’s not too late to get your submissions in. Lake Waccamaw Fire and Rescue Department is partnering with the North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal and the Columbus County Fire Marshal to provide free smoke detectors to residents in the community. If you or someone you know is in need of a smoke alarm, give them a call at 910.646.4441. 

The ‘Ponies and Pumpkins’ event for The Wild Horse Preserve at Grace Wynds Farm will be happening every Sunday in October from 1-4 p.m. Admission is $10, and visitors will get to enjoy hayrides, a petting zoo, the pumpkin patch, petting ponies, and playing in the Wild Horse Village. 

You can also checkout pumpkin decorating, pizza dinner, and hand-led pony rides for an addition expense. All proceeds go to The Wild Horse Preserve.

Grissettown-Longwood Fire Department will be opening their haunted trail for another season of spookiness every Friday and Saturday evening from 7-10 p.m. during the month of October and from 7-10 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 31, for Halloween night.    

Tickets are $20 per person, and you can get yours by calling 910.287.3030 or by visiting www.grissettownfire.com.  The station can be found at 758 Longwood Road in Ocean Isle Beach. 

The Town of Lake Waccamaw still has booth and trunk spaces available for anyone who would like to participate in the municipality’s annual Safe Night. Reach out to Chief Corey Finch at cfinch@lakewaccamawnc.gov. 

It’s hard to pick just one good Samaritan for this week’s Good News. Residents of Columbus County and even a few from Brunswick County came together to help clear water and clean local businesses in Whiteville affected by flooding from this past weekend’s storm. Folks donated equipment, lots of man power, and plenty of cleaning supplies to the cause. Thank you to everyone who opened your hearts and donated your time to put these businesses back together.

Have you ever wanted to learn to crochet? Southeastern Community College will be holding a class on the art of crocheting for beginners on Oct. 16 at 6 p.m. 

You will master the basics like single, half double, and double crochet stitches. The cost is $34.55, and you can sign up by visiting  https://southeasterncc-register.fundfive.com/filtered/course/csp. 

The Community Art Journey will be hosting Open Palette Thursday on Oct. 16 from 1-3 p.m. There’s no fees and no pressure. Just come in, sit down, and paint. The facility is located at 122 F Hillcrest Plaza in Lake Waccamaw.   

The Holliness Tabernacle Church of Tabor City will be having a fish plate sale on Oct. 17. Plates are $10 each and will include fish, baked beans, slaw, bread, and a dessert. If you would like to purchase tickets, you can contact Robert Nealey or Tim Bass via Facebook. Proceeds will go towards helping support the church.   

It’s time for the fifty-third annual Waccamaw Siouan Pow Wow, and the tribe is excited to once again share their rich culture, family, and traditions with you. Come out and enjoy food, tribal dancing, vendors, and learn all about the history of the Waccamaw Siouan. 

The entry fee is $8 for the school day, $5 for Friday night after 4 p.m., and $10 on Saturday. The event will run Oct. 17-18 at the Tribal Grounds located at 7239 Old Lake Road in Bolton. 

The Lake Waccamaw Depot Museum will be partnering with the Southeastern Oratorio during the depot’s next acoustic jam session to participate in North Carolina’s only event for ‘World Singing Day’ on Oct. 18. Those who wish to join in are asked to merely show up and be ready to sing from 11-11:45 a.m. at the museum. 

The purpose of ‘World Singing Day’ is to draw attention to the powerful benefits of group singing, even in casual, non-rehearsed settings. Lyric sheets will be handed out, along with one for this year’s ‘World Singing Day’ celebration song. The depot can be found at 205 Flemington Drive in Lake Waccamaw.

The Annie Catherine Pridgen Community Development Foundation is partnering with the Food Bank of Central and Eastern N.C. for a food distribution drive on Oct. 18 at Jerusalem Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. There is no cost, no I.D., or proof of income needed for assistance. The church’s address is 6224 Chadbourn Highway in Chadbourn.   

St. Paul A.M.E. Zion Church in the Freeman Community will have their food bank open every Thursday at 11 a.m. The church is located at 507 Moneyhole Road in Bolton.  

Lake Waccamaw Methodist Church will be having a the “Connecting Hearts for Jon David” community event on Sunday, Oct. 19, starting at 3 p.m.  Jon David Furlow was born at the end of February with three congenital heart defects and diagnosed with Taussig Bing. The infant has remained at Duke Medical Center, undergoing numerous surgeries, and his parents, Justin and Mallory Furlow, spend most of their time at their son’s side.  

The church will serve a spaghetti plate dinner from 3-5:30 p.m. You are welcome to pick up to-go boxes or sit and eat. At 6 p.m., they will all join together to have a special time of worship music provided by Willing Heart and members of Port City Collective. Any and all donations are welcome, and one hundred percent of the money raised will go to Jon David and his family. Lake Waccamaw Methodist is located at 506 Lake Shore Drive.  

Hallsboro United Methodist Church is holding an ongoing Clothes Drive to support students at Hallsboro Artesia Elementary School through its Connect Church Ministry. The goal is to ensure every child has access to clean, well-maintained clothing for all seasons. 

Donations of gently used clothing for children in kindergarten through 6th grade are appreciated, and new underwear is especially requested. The church has also provided the school with washers and dryers so clothes can be kept clean for children in need.

Speaking of HUMC, the church will be having Craft Night on Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. Bring an open heart, an open mind, and busy hands to 1004 Hallsboro Road South for holiday crafting fun.  

The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences will host the Waccamaw Siouan Heritage Celebration on Oct. 25 from 1-6 p.m. Learn about contemporary and traditional dance styles with demonstrations, along with hands-on activities and seminars that celebrate who they are today.

Columbus County Parks and Recreation is having Veterans Day Coloring Contest to celebrate and honor veterans through creativity. Age divisions are 3-5 years old, 6-9 years old, and 10-12 years old.

The Boys and Girls Home of North Carolina will host ‘Classy Cars and Country Cooking’ on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at the BGHNC Farm. There will be a car show, food trucks, and lots of fun. Admission is free. 

Car registration will be from 9-11 a.m., and judging will be at 11 a.m. with awards following. For car entries or vendor info and fees, contact Johnna Harrelson at 910.646.3083. All proceeds from the event will go to the BGHNC.  

Trinity Baptist Church will have their Homecoming and Pastor Appreciation Day on Oct. 26. Services will begin at 11 a.m., and a fellowship luncheon will immediately follow. The church is located at 201 South Thompson Street in Whiteville.

October 31 may be Halloween, but it’s also the last day to sponsor at a wreath for ‘National Wreaths Across America Day’ with the Veterans Memorial Park of America. All wreaths purchased will be placed on the graves of veterans at the park, the Columbus Memorial Park, New Hope Baptist Church, Chadbourn Memorial Cemetary, and Wright Cemetary on Dec. 13.

Fair Bluff will have their November First Saturday Market on Saturday, Nov. 1, starting at 8 a.m. Along with the usual vendors and yard sellers, West Columbus High School and the Fair Bluff Chamber of Commerce will be on site selling spot plates for $10 each.  

The plates will include two fish, sweet potato fries, slaw, and bread. All proceeds will go towards the WCHS FFA and the Chamber. There will also be a Veterans event at the market. All activities will take place at Riverside Drive in Fair Bluff. 

The Sheep Dog Foundation and the McMullen House of Heroes will be hosting their first annual Heroes Feast on Thanksgiving, Nov. 27, from 12-2 p.m. This meal is for on duty law enforcement, firefighters, correctional officers, dispatchers, emergency services personnel, and support personnel to honor your sacrifice of being on call during the holiday.  

The event will be held at 426 South Lee Street in Whiteville. Donations and volunteers are greatly appreciated, and those interested in doing so can email info@sheepdogfdn.com .
