Volleyball Playoffs: Gators Win, Knights, Stallions Fall

Three area teams entered the second round of the NCHSAA volleyball playoffs but only one advanced Tuesday.

East Columbus pushed their winning streak to 20 games as the Gators took out Neuse Charter 3-0. East Columbus is in the 1A classification bracket. The Gators won all three sets by scores of 25-18, 25-22, and 25-11. The Gators, now 20-1 on the season, will host #11 seed Oxford Prep (12-12) in the third round on Thursday. The Griffins defeated Weldon Tuesday 3-0.

West Bladen saw its season come to an end as they were defeated by Bartlett Yancey 3-0 in the 3A playoffs. The Knights lost the sets by scores of 25-18, 25-21, and 25-11. Greer Pope had 14 assists and Natalee Sykes contributed 10 assists in the loss.

The Knights finished what is probably their best season ever in volleyball. They had their most team wins in a season (15) and advanced to the second round for the first time in school history. West Bladen finishes its season at 15-4. Barlett Yancey advances to face Ayden-Griffen on Thursday.

South Columbus fell in the 3A bracket Tuesday to top seed Ayden-Grifton 3-0. The Chargers (23-7) took all three sets 25-18, 25-21, and 25-11. Laney Evans led the Chargers with 14 kills.

South Columbus concludes its season at 12-12. Ayden-Grifton will host eight seed Barlett Yancey (17-5) on Thursday in third round action.
