Woman Tied to Deputy’s Ambush Dies in Rest Home

The mother of the man charged with shooting and killing a Darlington County, S.C. deputy died Sunday in a Tabor City nursing home.

Linda Dennett, 77, told deputies that her son Cameron was not at home when Darlington deputies – including Cerro Gordo native Devin Mason – attempted to serve a warrant on him July 1. Dennett then opened fire on the deputies as Mason opened a bathroom door, investigators said. Cpl. Jacob Heatherly and Mason returned fire, striking Cameron Dennett. Mason died from his injuries.

Mason has been a DCSO deputy for a week before the shooting, according to Darlington Sheriff Michael August.

Linda Dennett, who was confined to a wheelchair, was released from jail but in custody at the Tabor City facility. She was charged with obstruction of justice and misprision of a felony. Misprision is defined as having knowledge of a felony and actively concealing the crime.

Cameron Dennett’s reported girlfriend, Kirsten Porter, was also arrested and faces charges of conspiracy, forgery and computer crimes. Porter was also charged with supplying firearms to a known felon and lying on firearms purchase forms. Both are federal crimes.

Both Porter and Dennett are being held without bond, still awaiting trial. Dennett was charged with murder, possession of a firearm by a felon, conspiracy, fraud and other crimes.

Mason graduated West Columbus High in 2017, and was previously a technician at Black’s Tire Service. He was a native of Evergreen. Mason wore the No. 15 jersey for West Columbus as a wide receiver, and played football in the 2014 through 2016 seasons.

The deputy’s name was added to the fallen officers’ memorial at the county fairgrounds last month.
