Lakefront Rules on Agenda Tomorrow

Lake Waccamaw Commissioners will consider a text amendment regulating structures along the waterfront Tuesday.

A public hearing on the proposed ordinance will be held at 5 p.m. in the commissioner chambers in town all at 205 Flemington Drive.

The amendment is reportedly in part to help clarify the need for construction permits of projects like privacy fences along the waterfront. Samira Davis was issued a stop work order on a privacy fence she says she need to protect her property near Dale’s from trespassers. Davis said shortly after purchasing the lot in 2022, she was asked to clear an overgrown area, providing a view of the lake. She told media that she then began having problems with people using her property.

Davis said the town’s previous building inspector said she did not need a permit for a privacy fence.

The proposed text amendment will clarify standards for location, height, material and transparency of any type of construction along the shore.

The draft calls for new rules to “preserve the scenic views of the lake and canal for residents and visitors. No structures higher than four feet, and must be at least 50 percent transparent. Only access ways, steps, decks, hand- and guardrails, bulkheads, fences, and walls, along with gazebos, will be allowed under the new rule.

The town commissioners are expected to vote on the ordinance at Tuesday’s regular meeting at 6 p.m. The public will be allowed to comment on the proposal at the hearing, which begins at 5 p.m.
