• The report said the victim had repeatedly wandered away from home while in Gaskins’ care.
Deputies have charged a Chadbourn area man with neglect of an elderly woman.
Marshall Lenue Gaskins, 70, of 174 Hunter Ave., Chadbourn was held on the single felony charge under a $5,000 secured bond, according to detention center records.
The sheriff’s office said deputies were called to a report of a missing woman on Nov. 25. They found her at a nearby residence and returned her to family members at her own home. Deputies noted she appeared “distressed” and had problems walking.
Relatives of the woman told deputies that they had concerns about the victim’s care by Gaskins, and noted that she had wandered away from home several times before. Deputies were called to the same home earlier this month and on other occasions when the woman disappeared. The Department of Social Services was already investigating possible abuse and neglect, the report said.
Deputies determined that Gaskins had “failed to take the necessary steps to ensure her safety,” and took him into custody on the single charge.
The report noted that Gaskins is not related to the victim.
