Sheriff’s Office Investigating Multiple School Cases

A series of fights and threats against schools and school personnel are being investigated by the sheriff’s office.

Reports show that a bus driver was nearly assaulted by a student at Williams Township School Oct. 24. The report said that the student became “irate” while boarding a bus at the end of the day, and cursed at the driver. The student then allegedly tried to hit the driver with a traffic cone.

The School Resource Officer (SRO) filed for a juvenile petition against the student. The report said the school administration supported the move, citing ongoing safety concerns. The case was turned over to the Department of Juvenile Justice.

On Oct. 29, the SRO at West Columbus High was contacted about a fight on a school bus the previous day. Surveillance footage showed the two students involved in an altercation, and the bus driver breaking up the fight, the report said. No serious injuries were reported.

Petitions were filed against both students for simple affray, and the case was turned over to Juvenile Justice investigators.

In an unrelated incident the same day, the SRO was also notified of another fight that morning between two students. One of those involved reportedly told a teacher about the fight that had occurred a short time before in a restroom. Both of those students were also placed under a petition for simple affray. The case is under investigation.

On Oct. 30, two students at West fought in the area of the guidance office, according to a report. One student attacked another, hitting the victim repeatedly in the face and head, causing minor injuries. School staff intervened and broke up the fight, the report said. The alleged assailant faces a petition for simple affray.

Deputies were called to East Columbus High School Oct. 30 after a student riding a school bus allegedly threatened to shoot up the school. The student’s bookbag and belongings were searched, and no weapons were found.

There was no evidence of an imminent threat to the school. The investigation is continuing, and school officials administered discipline according to standard procedures.
