Six Month Operation Leads to Chadbourn Arrest

Cortez Smith (CCSO)

Narcotics agents from Columbus and New Hanover counties say a Chadbourn man was a major part of a narcotics trafficking ring that stretched across multiple counties.

Cortez Mikell Smith, 30, of 118 S. Wilkes St., Chadbourn, was being held under $78,500 secured bond. In Columbus County, he faces four charges of trafficking in methamphetamine, and one count each of manufacturing the drug, possession with intent to manufacture sell and deliver meth, and selling drugs within 1,000 feet of a park. In New Hanover, Smith faces three charges of trafficking meth and one each of manufacturing meth; possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver meth; and maintaining a vehicle for drug activities. He was also charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession and drug paraphernalia, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.

The six-month investigation was the result of complaints by citizens and reports of alleged illegal activity, Sheriff Bill Rogers said in a press release.

“This joint operation targeted a narcotics network responsible for impacting communities throughout Columbus and New Hanover counties,” the release said. “Acting on these tips, Columbus County Vice/Narcotics Detectives initiated a series of undercover operations, intelligence gathering, and surveillance efforts. Information and evidence obtained during the investigation revealed the suspect’s connection to a larger narcotics distribution network operating between both counties.”

Both agencies shared intelligence and evidence, Rogers said. Smith was arrested in Chadbourn and transferred to New Hanover Detention for processing.

“This investigation is a testament to the power of teamwork and our shared mission to keep illegal drugs and dangerous weapons out of our neighborhoods,” Rogers said.  “I’m incredibly proud of the dedication and cooperation displayed by our Vice/Narcotics Unit and the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.”
