The holiday races are off to a smashing start, and tons of events are already planned for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Take the kiddos to read a book, enter a chili cooking contest, volunteer for a great cause, and don’t miss out on the hometown Christmas Party in Chadbourn.

The Columbus County Partnership for Children (Smart Start) will be having Storytime at the ELF today, Nov. 12, at 10 a.m. at the center. You can also join Booker Bear every Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. for more books and learning.
The Early Learning and Family Resource Center can be found at 107 West Main Street in Whiteville.
The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences at Whiteville invites all teens in the area to the Teen Science Cafe on Nov. 13 from 6-7 p.m. The guest speaker will be Tanner Murray, who will be discussing ‘Dolphins, Drama, and the Digital Age.’
This free event includes food and an activity. The NCMNS-W is located at 415 South Madison Street in Whiteville.
Columbus County Disaster Coalition will host their ‘Faith and Preparedness’ event on Thursday, Nov. 13, at the Vineland Station Depot. Several speakers will highlight the areas they work in, how you can be involved, plus resources and information you can take back to your members.
Refreshments will be provided, and registration is required by Nov. 7. Only three people per group is requested. You can sign up by emailing columbuscountydisasterco2025@gmail.com. Vineland is located at 701 South Madison Street in Whiteville.
Pastor Christ Honeycutt and Forward Church will be hosting their fall men’s retreat ‘Forged in Faith’ on Nov. 14 at 5 p.m. and Nov. 15 at 1 p.m. at Lake Waccamaw. The cost is $75 per person and includes a steak dinner Friday night and breakfast and lunch on Saturday.

It’s Collards, Cornbread, and Sweet Potato Day this Saturday, Nov. 15, at the Columbus County Farmers Market. From 8 a.m.-1 p.m., you can come out and enjoy Southern foods, vendors, games, and lots of fun. It’s a great opportunity to get some early Christmas shopping done.

Robinson Produce Farms will be hosting the Columbus County Chili Cookoff on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 11 a.m. The contest is free to enter, and folks can bring in their chili to see who has the best tasting dish, and who gets to take home those bragging rights.
Arrive and set up from 9-10:30 a.m., get your entries in before 11 a.m., and winners will be announced at 3 p.m. There will be live music, vendors, activities for kids, fresh baked goods, farm shopping, Sunset Slush, and hand dipped ice cream on tap throughout the day.

Bethel Holiness Church in Bladenboro will have their fall festival this Saturday, Nov. 15, from 5-8 p.m. at the church. There will be games, food, a guessing jar, candy apples, S’mores, a bonfire, and hayrides. The church is located at 204 Bethel Street.
Abundant Life Assembly of God will be holding a turkey shoot every Friday and Saturday night through November and the Wednesday night before Thanksgiving at 7 p.m. The cost is $4 per round with stock guns only.
There will be light shoot out rounds, kid’s and ladies’ rounds, and food, drink, and concessions will be available. Abundant Life is located at 5384 James B. White Highway South in Whiteville.
Mariah McDonald and her family built and stocked a blessing box for struggling families at Riegelwood Park at the ballfield located at the intersection of Waccamaw Road and Green Road. Those in need can stop by the box and pick up everything they need from baby formula to personal hygiene products.

Local food pantries are making sure that no one goes hungry in Columbus County. Below is a list of charities open this week:
- The Harvest Table, located at 211 East Columbus Street in Whiteville, is open every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 11 a.m.
- Facts of Life Church of the Living God Pillar Ground and Truth, located at 24678 Peacock Road in Tabor City, will open this morning at 11 a.m. to giveaway senior boxes.
- Lifesavers Outreach, located at 3440 James B. White Highway South in Whiteville, opens Wednesdays from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. while supplies last.
- St. Paul A.M.E. Zion Church, located at 507 Money Hole Road in Bolton, is open every Thursday from 12-2 p.m.
- The Lake Waccamaw Food Ministry Food Bank will be open this Saturday, Nov. 15, at 9 a.m. The event is held every 3rd Saturday of the month at the First Baptist Church of Lake Waccamaw. FBCLW’s address is 200 Dixon Street.
Carolyn’s Kaleidoscope Children’s Advocacy Center is collecting non-perishable food items for families at the facility. Canned goods of all sorts like rice, beans, ready to eat meals, instant grits/oatmeal, noodles and snacks are requested for the cause.
Items can be dropped off or shipped to 219 North Lee Street in Whiteville.
The Town of Brunswick and Friends will be serving Thanksgiving dinner to families in need on Nov. 19 from 11 a.m. -4 p.m. at Town Hall. Volunteer servers and delivery drivers are still needed for the event, and if you would like to help out, you can contact Mayor Jason Ellerby at 910.770.3376. Brunswick Town Hall’s address is 40 Popular Street.
McMullen House for Heroes is now collecting blankets and coats for the winter. Twin- and full-size washable warm blankets and coats from baby to adult sizes are needed. They don’t have to be new, but they do need to be just cleaned and in good condition with no rips, tears, or broken zippers.

Brown Street Station will be hosting the ‘Hometown Christmas Party’ on Saturday, Nov. 22, from 1-4 p.m. Entry is free for children and $5 for adults. There will be photos with Mr. and Mrs. Claus, live entertainment, face painting, games, treats for all ages, hot cocoa, cookies, and community cheer.
Brown Street Station is located at 100 East Railroad Ave in Chadbourn. One adult per three children is requested at entry.
If you missed signing up your child for Toys for Tots on Nov. 1, you will have another chance to do so on Dec. 6 from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. at two local churches at each end of the county.
Tabor City, Pireway, Fair Bluff, Cerro Gordo, Chadbourn, and Evergreen communities can visit Believers Home Fellowship Church located at 13590 James B. White Highway South in Tabor City. Whiteville, Old Dock, Nakina, Hallsboro, and Lake Waccamaw communities can sign up their youngsters at Abundant Life Assembly of God at 5384 James B. White Highway South in Whiteville.
Registration is in person only, and identification for each child is required via Medicaid card, birth certificate, identification card, etc. Social Security cards are not allowed. An I.D. is also required for the adult who is signing up the children. For more information about the program, call 910.840.9696 before 9 p.m.
Hallsboro United Methodist Church is gearing up for their community Christmas event, and they need you. Vendors and sponsors are welcome to join HUMC for their Christmas celebration on Friday, Dec. 6.
The event will include photos with Santa, snacks and treats, Christmas tree decorating, and vendors and sellers. Those interested in participating can visit www.hallsboroumc.org for more information.
