The Good News Nov. 19-25, 2025

As the holiday season arrives, communities, families, and churches in Columbus County are gearing up for a joyful lineup of Thanksgiving and Christmas events. From meal ministries and seasonal concerts to festive parades and turkey shoots, there are plenty of opportunities to gather and give thanks. 

If your church or civic group has turkey shoots, Christmas markets, or seasonal events that you want published in The Good News, send your submissions to crystalfaircloth@columbuscountynews.com. We will get them out there for absolutely free.   

Abundant Life Assembly of God will be holding a turkey shoot every Friday and Saturday night through November and the Wednesday night before Thanksgiving at 7 p.m. The cost is $4 per round with stock guns only.  

There will be light shoot out rounds, kid’s and ladies’ rounds, and food, drink, and concessions will be available. Abundant Life is located at 5384 James B. White Highway South in Whiteville. 

Black Friday may be coming up after Thanksgiving, but Nov. 21 will be known as Pink Friday in Columbus County. Pink Friday is a national movement that encourages everyone to shop small the Friday before Thanksgiving and celebrates the local businesses that make up the heart of our community.  

 

The Town of Sandyfield will be hosting a Community Health Fair on Nov. 22 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at Town Hall. There will be free resource information, free health screenings, and prizes. The facility is located at 1795 Woodyard Road in Riegelwood.     

The Boys and Girls Home of North Carolina will have their Thankful Christmas concert and nativity show on Nov. 22 at the BGHNC Chapel and Fellowship Hall. You can come early, enjoy refreshments, and browse through hundreds of nativities for sale. 

The concert starts at 3 p.m. and will feature the Brunswick Brass Band, Burdette Duo, Jamie Faulk, the Southeastern Oratorio Ensemble, and some caroling with the crowd. There is no entry fee, but any donations will benefit the programs of care at the BGHNC.  

It’s not too late to have your Thanksgiving meal prepared for you by Sarah’s Market. Chef Sarah Gore and her team have a pre-order menu for all your main entrees, side dishes, desserts, and more.

Brown Street Station will be hosting the ‘Hometown Christmas Party’ on Saturday, Nov. 22, from 1-4 p.m. Entry is free for children and $5 for adults. There will be photos with Mr. and Mrs. Claus, live entertainment, face painting, games, treats for all ages, hot cocoa, cookies, and community cheer.   

Brown Street Station is located at 100 East Railroad Ave in Chadbourn. One adult per three children is requested at entry.   

Willing Vessels Ministries will have their Thanksgiving meal giveaway on Nov. 22 beginning at 10 a.m. in the parking lot of Hope Community Church next to Tractor Supply. The speaker this year will be Evangelist David Pait with Real World Outdoor Ministries.  

Delivery will be available to Tabor City and Whiteville nursing homes. Hope Community Church is located at 38 Whites Crossing Plaza in Whiteville.  

McMullen House for Heroes is now collecting blankets and coats for the winter. Twin- and full-size washable warm blankets and coats from baby to adult sizes are needed. They don’t have to be new, but they do need to be just cleaned and in good condition with no rips, tears, or broken zippers.

For the folks in need in Western Columbus County, Capture Community Center in Loris, SC will be having their annual community Thanksgiving dinner giveaway on Nov. 25 beginning at 12 p.m.  

The free feast will feature turkey and dressing, ham, rice and gravy, mac and cheese, green beans, and a roll. Dine in or take out. The meal is for everyone, and deliveries will be available for city employees and the hospital upon request. Coastal Family Urgent Care is asking for donations to provide meals for the elderly on Thanksgiving. The team is expecting to feed around 150 seniors. Supplies can be brought to office located at 310 Liberty Street in Whiteville, or you can send a monetary donation via Venmo to @coastalfamilycharities.  

Items needed include: 

  • Ten Frozen turkeys 
  • Eight Hams 
  • Ten 101 oz cans of beans 
  • 200 Hawaiian rolls 
  • Two 3-gallon containers of peanut oil 
  • Eight Cakes 
  • Ten Pies 
  • Ten tables 
  • 100 chairs 
  • One Tent 

Ten volunteers will also be needed for the event. Centerpieces will be made by students at the local primary schools, plates, napkins, and utensils will be provided by A New Beginning Home Care, and donuts will be donated by The Donut Shop. Anyone interested in helping out can call Brittany at 910.317.5550. 

Finders Keepers Thrift Store now has a Pay it Forward Board in the shop. Folks can prepay for a clothing item, write an encouraging message for the recipient, and pin the message to the board. Those in need can come in a get the piece of clothing at no cost to them. 

The store has also continued to stock a free food table made possible by community donations. The address for Finders Keepers is 1138 South Madison Street in Whiteville.  

Whiteville will have their annual Christmas parade on Dec. 6 starting at 6 p.m. This year, the procession will feature a very special Grand Marshal, Kyla Mae Benton. Six-year-old Kyla has already inspired the community with her spirit, strength, and remarkable journey of healing after surviving a tragic car accident last January. She has shown what hope, determination, and what the power of community prayer can do 

The parade will kick off on Webster Street and make its way through downtown, ending at Madison, Franklin, and Lee Street intersection. After the big event, gather with family and friends at Vineland Station for the annual tree lighting, some food trucks, and so much more.

Hallsboro United Methodist Church is gearing up for their community Christmas event, and they need you. Vendors and sponsors are welcome to join HUMC for their Christmas celebration on Friday, Dec. 6.  

The event will include photos with Santa, snacks and treats, Christmas tree decorating, and vendors and sellers. Those interested in participating can visit www.hallsboroumc.org for more information.

The Columbus County Department of Social Services is looking for Christmas sponsorship to help bring joy to children in foster care this holiday season. Those interested will receive a wish list for a little boy or girl to make this Christmas a very special one.

The Columbus County Farmers Market invites you to experience the magic of Christmas on Dec. 13 from 9 a.m.- 7 p.m. Meet Mr. and Mrs. Claus, the Grinch, and Cindy the Who. The Carolina Country Cruisers will be there with cars and razors from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and the Edgewood Chorus will perform at 10:30 a.m.  

Enjoy crafts, door prizes, games, vendors, food and photo ops all day long. Folks interested in peddling their wares can pick a spot for $50. The market can be found at 132 Government Complex Drive in Whiteville.  

Columbus Regional Healthcare made a big donation to the Columbus Baptist Association’s Backpack Buddies Ministry last week. The truckload of supplies will go a long way in helping kids in local schools not go hungry over the weekends. Reverend Dave Heller commended CRHS for their continued support for both the Backpack Buddies program and the Toy Store.
