While there was virtually no accumulation, Columbus and Bladen counties had an unusual November snow Monday.
The brief bout of flurries, mixed with rain in most places, may be the earliest recorded in the area.
“I’ve been here since the end of 2005, and it’s definitely the earliest I’ve seen it snow here,” said Meteorologist Christopher Cawley.
Social media was filled with video and photographs of fluffy flakes from Cerro Gordo to Lake Waccamaw. There was some accumulation on surfaces in a few areas like Bladenboro and North Whiteville, but most of the snow melted well before hitting the ground.
Today’s weather brought a real concern as dry, windy conditions are making for dangerous wildfire conditions. Low humidity and gusty winds from the northwest have increased the chances of out of control burns.
Officials are urging anyone with plans for outside burning today starting any fires until conditions improve later this week.
