Here’s today’s Bottom Line
GROWING SEASON ENDS TONIGHT.
For comparison… the normal high through the month of JANUARY is 52-54 degrees, with a normal low of 33.
A powerful cold front has cleared the area. Today will feature blustery conditions, winds gusting 25-30 mph, with highs struggling into the lower 50s. At least it’ll be sunny.
We’re crystal clear for tonight, and one saving grace is the fact that the wind will continue to be elevated. This keeps our lows “only” in the upper 20s (as opposed to around 20 if the winds go calm). The National Weather Service has issued a FREEZE WARNING for Columbus County for tonight into early Tuesday.
PEOPLE, PETS, PLANTS, PIPES. During a freeze warning, it’s crucial to take precautions to protect these four areas by bringing pets inside, bringing sensitive plants indoors or covering them, insulating exposed pipes, and ensuring people are prepared for the cold by dressing warmly and having a safe way to heat their homes.
People —
1. Stay informed by checking the National Weather Service alerts.
2. Dress in warm, layered clothing when going outside tonight.
3. Ensure your home has a safe heating source.
4. Check on vulnerable neighbors, friends, and family.
Pets —
1. Bring all pets indoors or to a warmer, safe location.
2. Provide fresh food, water, and a warm place to sleep.
Plants —
1. Bring potted or sensitive plants inside if possible.
2. If they must stay outside, cover them with blankets or tarps to protect them from frost.
3. Be aware that a hard freeze will kill many types of commercial crops and residential plants.
Pipes —
1. Insulate any exposed pipes, especially those along exterior walls, using pipe insulation, towels, or other materials.
2. Turn off and drain outdoor water sources, such as hoses and sprinklers.
3. Consider letting a faucet drip slightly to keep water moving and prevent freezing.
4. Set your thermostat to at least 60°F even when you are home, and consider doing so overnight to prevent pipes from freezing.
Veterans Day… won’t be much warmer. The Canadian high builds virtually overhead and while our winds will calm down, highs will only reach the upper 40s even with full sunshine. The high slides off the coast for Tuesday night, so we won’t be as cold but a widespread thick frost is likely as we drop to between 30 and 35 degrees.
Temperatures make a rather remarkable return to seasonal normal values through the end of the work week as high pressure settles in over the Gulf coast, combined with a second high over the TN/NC border by Saturday. Dry weather will persist… rain chances are near zero for the entire forecast period.
And no, it’s not going to snow in 10 days.
TROPICS: Nope. Ain’t happening, folks.
