Pack Recovers to Take Win

WHITEVILLE — Whiteville overcame a sluggish start to crush East Columbus 55-32 Thursday night in boys basketball.

The Gators jumped out on the Wolfpack 7-2 early, forcing the Pack to call a timeout. Coach Rose made the correct adjustments and the Wolfpack went on a 14-2 run to finish the first quarter ahead 16-10. The Wolfpack applied full court man to man pressure, causing East Columbus to struggle offensively all night. The Pack pushed the lead to 32-16 at the break.

In the second half didn’t fair much better offensively, as the Gators failed to score in double digits in the final two quarters. That is a nightmare for high school coaches. The Pack outscored the Gators 12-8 in the third quarter and 11-8 in the fourth quarter for the 55-32 final.

Ty’lae Rose led the Wolfpack in scoring with 13 points. Caleb McLean pitched in 10 points in the victory. KJ Thurman led the Gators with 10 points. Whiteville (1-1) will host West Brunswick (4-1) Friday night. East Columbus (0-4) hosts South Brunswick (4-2) December 5.

Knights Knock Currituck in Cancer Showcase

KILL DEVIL HILLS — West Bladen used a late 17-4 run in a see-saw battle Thursday to down Currituck County 84-76 in the Good Guys versus Cancer Basketball Showcase.

Currituck led by two 15-13 at the end of the first period only to have the West Bladen Knights take a two-point advantage into the half 37-35. Jamie Dance scored nine of his game high 27 points to lead a 15-0 run in the third quarter to give the Currituck a 12 point lead. The Currituck Knights blistered the nets in the third quarter for 29 points to make the score 64-57 at the end of the third quarter.

Then Currituck got cold and West Bladen got hot in the fourth quarter. Trailing 72-70, Jackson Pait hit a three-pointer with 3:17 left on the clock to start a 8-0 run to push West Bladen ahead for good 78-72. The West Bladen Knights never looked back to the 84-76 victory.

Jackson Pait had 22 points to lead West Bladen. Kendall Lessane added 21 points and 11 rebounds while Tylik McCall pitched in 19 points. Jamie Dance led Currituck with 27 points and Tristen Peterson added 20 points. Holden Pickering chipped in 10 points in the loss.

West Bladen, now 4-1 on the season, plays Landstown, Va. (2-0) Saturday in the Showcase. Currirtuck (1-1) will face Camden on Friday in the Showcase.
