Whiteville City Council on Tuesday will bid farewell to City Manager Darren Currie.

Currie is retiring effective Dec. 3. He came to the city after serving as Lake Waccamaw Town Manager, and previously worked with county administration. More than 11 years of his 30-plus in local government have been with the city.

In a memo to the board, Currie asked that they consider city finance officer Colburn Brown for the interim manager’s position.

The board will also say goodbye to Councilmember Helen Holden Tuesday and swear in Linda Smith to the District 1 council seat.

Holden was appointed to fulfill an unexpired term in 2021. She was defeated in November by Smith, a newcomer to city politics.

Smith will be sworn into office Tuesday, along with incumbents Vickie Pait, Tim Collier and  Mayor Terry Mann.
