Fire and emergency officials are urging residents of most of the state – including Columbus County.
Low humidity and high winds, combined with a wealth of dry leaves, grasses and ground litter, will create near perfect conditions for wildfires, according to the National Weather Service and the N.C. Forest Service.
Officials are extremely concerned due to the timing of the weather pattern – while winds should die down this evening, celebratory fireworks could cause wildfires.
No burn bans have been issued for the southeastern part of the state, but officials urge that any outdoor burning be delayed, including leaf and limb, yard debris and campfires.
