A $500,000 grant will provide a railroad spur to one of the county’s strongest industries, possibly opening the way for more jobs in the Tabor City area.

Rep. Brenden Jones said the grant from the Southeast Crescent Regional Commission will improve the railroad in that area, and provide a spur that will speed up operations at the Atlantic Co.

There will always be opportunities to secure grant funding that helps create good, private sector jobs,” Jones said in a news release. “I’m grateful that the Southeast Crescent Regional Commission recognized the need in Tabor City and chose to invest in this project.

“I also appreciate the strong partnership with Tabor city’s local government. My office will always work to connect the municipalities in my district with grant dollars that bring meaningful improvements back home.”

The 2,850 spur rail spur will allow Atlantic to make use of a former tobacco warehouse to expand operations. It is expected to create at least 16 jobs.

Currently the rail runs close to the proposed expansion, said Al Leonard, capital projects director for the town.

“The building is beside the tracks,” he explained, “but this will make it so they can directly load and unload paper products from rail cars. It’s a big win for Tabor City.”
